LEO HAS WON AT LAST by M. Fernanda Avilés

The article I chose to present is entitled “Leo has won at last” posted on the TinyTexts blog. It tackles Leonardo DiCaprio’s first Oscar, it explains that this remarkable actor had been first nominated 22 years ago as best supporting actor for his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and has been nominated six times ever since. He won as best actor for his role in The Revenant.

The author’s focus is DiCaprio’s speech and the public’s reaction, not only they applauded with enthusiasm but they stood up for him. As he is an activist for the environment, during his speech the award winner actor thanked everyone and used that opportunity to raise awareness about climate change. He insisted on the fact that it’s a real problem that affects all humanity plus, he said that we need to work together to solve this important issue. Finally, he asked all the public not to take this planet for granted.

Personally, I linked this article with the notion Myths and Heroes because I strongly believe Leonardo DiCaprio will become a myth for all the exceptional roles he interpreted and he is definitely a hero for many, not just because of his acting but for his interest and actions to protect the planet.

I picked this article because I was full with joy when he won, as I had bet my brother on it and got a free dinner, I learned that he’s a real activist and not just for the fame, he truly cares for the environment’s health.

“The bigger the ring, the shorter the marriage” by Lucia Alvarenga from tinytexts.wordpress.com

This article is about a study made at Emory University in the United States, which shows that in many cases of divorce the fact of receiving an engagement ring worth between £1,200 and £2,000 is common. Which means that the owners of a ring of that value are 1.3 times more likely to get divorced.

The author of the article also suggests a possible reason to explain why the divorces took place. It may be because the women who were proposed  paid more attention to the ring than to the men who gave it to them.

I linked this article with the notion “Spaces and Exchanges”, firstly because the statistics used in it were made in the United States but the results that were published were in pounds sterling and not American dollars, and because I believe that the objective of a proposal is to get engaged with a person you truly love and who truly loves you back. However, in many of those cases of divorce the couples didn’t exchange their feelings and love , which may be the reason that led them to that final decision.

I chose this article because I thought that the title was a bit cliché and I was curious about knowing what was the correlation between a ring and the length of a marriage. I also learnt that I ought to be careful in similar situations.
